Understanding about the Cholesterol

Naturally, In your body, the liver produces a substance known as Cholesterol. It is a fat, waxy like substance. Cholesterol does not travel through the blood because it does not dissolve in the water. Lipoproteins help to transport cholesterol through the blood.


There are two types of Lipoproteins:

  • Lipoprotein with high density: Cholesterol present in this type known as “good”
  • Lipoprotein with low density: Cholesterol present in this type known as “bad” cholesterol. It can cause serious health problems as heart attack or heart stroke.

Nowadays, junk food or fatty food is the main reason for the cholesterol and fat. In your body required cholesterol is formed by the liver. The foods which contain the high amount of fat increase the level of LDL (Low-density Lipoprotein), and it causes high cholesterol (Hypercholesterolemia). If the HDL (High-density lipoprotein) levels are too low, and LDL levels are too high, then the high cholesterol may affect badly on your body.

Causes of cholesterol:

Generally, High cholesterol is made by eating unhealthy foods which are high in cholesterol, fats. Examples of unhealthy foods which increases high cholesterol:

  • Chocolate
  • Red meat
  • Peanut butter
  • Foods made with palm oil, coconut oil
  • Eggs (the yolk)

The Diabetes and hypothyroidism are other conditions which may also contribute the high cholesterol.

Symptoms of High Cholesterol:

According to many cases, High cholesterol does not show any symptom.  But the most people, who not had the regular checkup or followed their cholesterol levels, their first symptom are the event such as problems.

How to treat and prevent High cholesterol:

Follow the following tips reduce the risk of coronary heart disease and heart attack:

  • Daily exercise
  • Heart-healthy food in diet
  • Avoid smoking
  • Maintain the healthy weight.
  • Choose lean meat.
  • Avoid fast-food and junk food.


The Statins are the most commonly prescribed medication used for the treatment of high cholesterol. It works by preventing your liver from producing more cholesterol. It decreases the level of LDL cholesterol and also helps to raise the level of HDL cholesterol.
